![]() ![]() The developers set out to create a classic JRPG "for the modern era" and I think they've been very successful, driven forward by love of the genre and a clear vision for the kind of title they wished to create. Puzzles are present as well and only add to the experience, never seeming overly obtuse. Humor is a focus and even some of the mechanics call back to funny JRPG tropes of ages past, such as the ability to "suplex' much larger monsters (even dragons and a ghostly train!) so fondly remembered by fans of Sabin from Final Fantasy VI. This allows for each playable character to be fully developed mechanically and story-wise with a unique feel. However, rest assured that Shadows of Adam was created with the developers using various tools and engines, as well as custom artwork, to craft the experience as they envisioned.Ĭlocking in at around 12 hours, Shadows of Adam focuses on story and character development by keeping the party size small and automatically determined like its MQ inspiration. This can range from reasonable wariness because of the occasional glut of low-quality RPGMaker games (often using default tilesets and assets) coming onto Steam for a quick buck, to outlandish prejudice that decries even the best of the RPGMaker titles and all retro-appearing JRPGs by proxy. I should mention that Shadows of Adam is NOT a RPGMaker title, as there are those who judge pixel/sprite based JRPGs being created on that particular software. Likewise, its battle system's "AP resource (which stands in for mana, energy, and other ability-funding resources) is unique in its restoration automatically after each turn of battle or when defeating enemies, which prompts a fast paced and tactical playstle. Mystic Quest also inspires other mechanics such as replacing random battles with visually apparent enemy parties, but Shadows of Adam also go beyond that paradigm when warranted, such as including an overworld and airship features not present in MQ. The most striking visual comparisons come to the latter creating an aesthetic not often seen among retro-JRPG today, especially the noteworthy battle screens/UI which take place looking "over your party's shoulders" at much larger, detailed, and threatening enemy sprites. ![]() Able to act as a homage to the best of the SNES era while still feeling fresh today, Shadows of Adam showcases some of the best elements of the genre.įrom its handcrafted pixel art to its mechanics, the developers clearly were inspired by some of the lauded JRPGs of that classic era, such as Chrono Trigger and (most uniquely) Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. ![]() Shadows of Adam ( ) is a well crafted retro-JRPG created by Something Classic Games after a successful crowdfunding drive. While we have plenty of threads talking about major releases, I thought many of us may enjoy a worthwhile independent title as well. ![]()
